Institute of Superconductivity
In recognition of the potential benefits to be obtained from research in the field of high-temperature superconductivity and in view of the central role played by its researchers in this developing field, Bar-Ilan University established an "Institute of Superconductivity". In this Institute, experimental and theoretical efforts are coordinated within one organizational framework, thus enabling the various groups in the Department of Physics to conduct long-term, methodical studies aimed towards a breakthrough in this field.
The Institute comprises a number of collaborating groups led by Prof. Yosef Yeshurun, Dr. Yehuda Schlesinger, Dr. Leonid Burlachkov and Prof. Boris Shapiro. Prof. Yosef Yeshurun, Head of the Institute, is also Director of the National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements at Bar-Ilan University. Most of the activity at this center is dedicated to experimental studies of magnetic properties of high-temperature superconductors, in particular to flux properties (global and local flux creep, persistent currents, effect of heavy ion irradiation etc.). Application-oriented studies in the laboratory, focus on high-current applications and energy storage. Dr. Yehuda Schlesinger is conducting magneto-resistance measurements. Dr. Leonid Burlachkov and Prof. Boris Shapiro lead the theoretical groups, dealing with flux properties, Josephson Junctions and mechanisms of superconductivity.
In 1992 Bar-Ilan's Center of
Superconductivity was recognized as a National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements
by
the Israel Academy for Science and Humanities and by Israel's Ministry of Science and
Arts.
In addition to its designation as a National
Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements, Bar-Ilan University's Center
of Superconductivity has received an impressive number of national and international
distinctions in the course of only a few short years:
The
Israel Academy for Science and Humanities named Bar-Ilan a Center of Excellence in
Superconductivity in 1994.
The MINERVA association and the German Ministry of Science named
the Bar-Ilan Center a MINERVA Center in 1993.
The above two distinctions have been awarded to Prof. Yeshurun of Bar-Ilan’s Center for Superconductivity together with Prof. G. Deutscher of Tel-Aviv University and Prof. G. Koren of the Technion.
The
Israel Academy for Science and Humanities named Bar-Ilan a Center of Excellence
in Local Magnetic Measurements in 1999.
This distinction has been awarded to Prof. Y. Yeshurun of Bar-Ilan University together with Prof. E. Zeldov of The Weizmann Institute of Science.
The Bar-Ilan
Center of Superconductivity has been the recipient of
prestigious research grants from the United-States/Israel Bi-National Science Foundation,
the German-Israel Foundation, Israel's Ministry of National Infrastrucutres, Ministry of Scienceand
Technology, ministry of Industry and Commerce and other government bodies and foundations.
National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements
The Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements at Bar-Ilan University, headed by Prof. Yosef Yeshurun, was awarded the title "National Laboratory" by the Israel Academy of Science and Humanities and the Ministry of Science and Arts in 1992. Measurements in the laboratory tackle open and intriguing questions regarding spin-glasses, amorphous ferromagnetism and superconductivity. The latter is, at the moment, the focus of activity in the laboratory. This Laboratory is today part of the Institute of Superconductivity.
