First Announcement and Call for Papers
Dear Colleague,
We take pleasure in inviting you to practice in the 27th International Conference of the IASL, which will take place at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel, on July 5-9, 1998.
The program will include the Second Annual International Forum on Research in School Librarianship, as well as presentations, poster sessions and discussions related to the following themes:
Information literacy and information skills.
Reading as a basis for using information technology efficiently.
Future changes in educational systems.
Minority language reading in the world of information technology.
Crisis in teaching reading as a skill.
Reading encouragement.
Children’s literature: new formats (multimedia etc.).
Children’s literature: reflections of society culture and ethnic groups.
Role of libraries and technology in developing and improving plans of action for learning.
Role of libraries and technology in developing and improving courseware.
The digital library in the school library media center.
Social information in the school library media center.
Censorship and other ethical issues in the school library media center.
Professional training of media specialists, school librarians and teacher-librarians.
Professional growth and development.
The conference will be held mainly at the beautiful campus of Bar-Ilan University, near Tel-Aviv. As an added attraction before, during and after the conference there will be opportunities to enjoy the unique archaeological findings, landscapes and cultural treasure of the Holy Land. Library visits and a unique and stimulating Sabbath-hospitality program will be offered to participants and accompanying persons, so that everyone should enjoy an unforgettable experience.
Call for Papers:
Participants wishing to present a paper are invited to submit an extended abstract for oral or poster presentation. The program Committee will review the abstracts, and participants will be notified.
Selection of papers will be based upon extended abstracts, which should include at least 4 pages (approx. 1000 words). The abstracts, accompanied by a separate title page should be sent to:

A limited number of abstracts will be selected for oral presentation, and a selection will be published in the Conference Proceedings book, which will be distributed to all participants at the registration desk.
Deadline for submission of extended abstracts: December 31, 1997.
Notice of acceptance will be sent to authors no later than Feb. 15, 1998.
Deadline for submission of full paper: March 20, 1998.

The 27th Annual Conference on Education for all: Culture, Reading and Information will be heat Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan and at Beit-Berl College, Kfar-Sava.

The Conference will take place on July 5-10, 1998.

The official of the conference will be English.
Registration:
Registration fee:
$320 (if paid before May 10th)
$360 - late registration
The conference fee includes admission to the conference; proceedings; coffee breaks; opening reception including meal; Monday's lunch; Wednesday's folklore evening including supper; full day tour of Jerusalem (on Tuesday); free transportation from the hotels to Bar-Ilan University, according to the conference schedule.
Climate:
The weather in Ramat Gan at this time of the year is sunny and hot.
The temperatures range between 18° C (66° F)- 28° C (86° F).
Do not forget to bring along swimming suits, hats and sun glasses!
Social Events:
A stimulating social program and a half a day tour are planned for the participants and for accompanying persons. Sabbath-hospitality program by local librarians is planned.

In addition to the social events of the conference, and extensive range of tours, social, and recreational activities will be offered for accompanying persons.

Hotel rooms have been reserved at various hotels in Tel Aviv ranging from 5 stars to youth hostels at special congress rates for participants.

Thursday 2 July, 1998
Travel via the Judean Desert to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. Ascend by cable car to Massada, the Herodian Fortress, that was the last stronghold of the Jewish Zealots in their struggle against the Romans.
Continue to Ein Gedi for an “unsinkable” swim.
Return to Tel-Aviv.

TOUR B:
Full-day tour of Jerusalem Old and New
Thursday 2 July, 1998
We drive to the Haas promenade for a breathtaking view of ancient Jerusalem.
We continue to Jaffa Gate, one of Jerusalem’s Gate from the Ottoman period.
Walk through the Arab bazaar to the rooftops of the Old City for an overview of the Christian, Jewish, Moslem and Armenian Quarters.
Drive to Bethlehem, visit Rachel’s Tomb and the Church of the Nativity, where Mary gave birth to Jesus.
You will visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial as well as the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament and the famous “Menorah”.
Return to Tel-Aviv.

Tour of Galilee and Golan
Sunday 12 July - Monday 13 July, 1998
Leave Tel-Aviv and head north along the coast to scenic Caeserea, with its famous Roman harbor, amphitheatre and crusader fortress.
Continue inland to Megido, one of King Solomon’s chariot cities, and explore its remarkable excavations.
Drive to Nazareth, where Jesus grew up, visit the Church of the Annunciation.
Continue to Sephoris (Tzippori), a major city in ancient times, and the site of one of the region’s beautiful Roman mosaic floors.
Pass through the village of Cana and then on to Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee.
Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Monday 13 July, 1998
Boat cruise on the Sea of Galilee, visit the ancient synagogue at Capernaum, where Jesus preached. We claimed the road leading the Golan Heights crossing the town of Katzrin to visit Syrian fortifications.
We cross the rift valley to enjoy the dramatic landscape of the upper Galilee, stopping in the mystical town of Sefad.
Walk along cobbled pathways where ancient synagogues contrast with a thriving artist’s colony.
Drive to Beit Shean to see the excavations of what was a major Roman city.
Follow the Jordan valley and via the Judaen Hills to Jerusalem.
Dinner and overnight at hotel.

Day 1
Drive to the Old City of Jerusalem.
Walk through the Jaffa Gate, visit the renewed Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall.
Walk through the colorful bazaars to visit Rachel’s Tomb and the Church of the Nativity.
Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 2
Drive to view the Knesset Israel Parliament building, continue to Hadassah Medical Center to see Chagall Windows, visit Yad Vashem, Holocaust museum and memorial.
Tour the treasures of Israel museum with its Shrine of the Book housing the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3
Drive through the Judaen hills to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth.
Ascend by cable car to the last stronghold of the Zealots in their struggle against the Roman army.
Visit the excavations, Herod the Great Palace, synagogue and bath houses. Then, opportunity to enjoy an “unsinkable swim in the Dead Sea.
Drive via Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.
Return to Jerusalem.
Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 4
After breakfast, departure for homebound flights.
Rate: $ 415 per person in a double room

Monday 6 July, 1998
Depart hotel at 09:00 am for a half-day tour to the city of Tel-Aviv and Jaffa, including the flea market, the artist’s colony and galleries in Jaffa, visit the modern parts of Tel-Aviv.

Depart hotel at 09:00 and drive along the coastal road to Caesarea with its Crusader port and theatre.
Proceed to the port city of Haifa, visit the Bahai Shrine and beautiful Persian gardens.
Continue up the Carmel Mountains and visit the Druze villages.
Return to Tel-Aviv.
