Eitan Avitsur

Born in Jerusalem, 1941. He started his musical career as a conductor of high school ensembles and as a composer. He completed his professional education at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and at the Mozarteum of Salzburg where he specialized in advaced conducting. He has conducted all the important orchestras of Israel in concerts, recordings for the Israeli radio and television and for commercial records. He was one of the founders of the Natanya orchestra in 1973, performing with it programs of mainly Israeli contemporary music. He was also the permanent conductor of Tel-Aviv orchestra in the years 1973-76.

Besides his career as a conductor Avitsur is also a well known composer. His list of compositions includes more than 300 works, among them oratorios, cantatas, symphonies, chambre music, background music for about 200 movies and T.V. programs, and arrangements. Most of them have been successfully performed. Many have been commissioned by cultural agencies in Israel and abroad.

He has taught at Bar-Ilan university since 1972 and is now a professor of music in the department of music. In 1990 he founded the Electro-Acoustic Music Program, of which project he is still in charge. He established the Computer Music Laboratory which today is considered the most advanced of its kind in Israel.

In 1987 he was appointed conductor of the Jerusalem Youth Orchestra. Under his guidance the orchestra has achieved a very important role in Israel's musical life, performing educational youth concerts, world premiers of Israeli compositions, recordings for the Israel TV and radio, and various festival concerts, enhancing important official events in Jerusalem. Avitsur toured for many years with his orchestra in Europe and The USA, and many excellent reviews attest to his growing success.

Conducting

1959 to date Conductor of Israeli and international symphony and chamber orchestras and choirs; conductor of recordings for radio, television and commercial records.
Nov. 22, 1998 Conducted a performance of Israeli and Hungarian works recorded in Budapest for Radio Budapest.
Nov. 21, 1998 Conducted a special concert of Israeli and Hungarian works with the Kiskunfelegyhaza City Youth Symphonic Band, in Hungary.
Nov. 12, 1998 Conducted the world premiere of Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, (E. Avitsur), with the soloist Haim Avitsur and the Orchestra of The Mannes College of Music, New York. The performance was delivered as part of the celebration of Israel’s 50th anniversary of independence, with support from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Israeli Consulate, New York.
February 1998 Member of the organizing committee for the special seminar of Bar Ilan University composers with the Kiskunfelegyhaza City Youth Symphonic Band and the conductor Laszlo Marosi, with the participation of the Jerusalem Youth Orchestra and Kfar Sava Municipality.

Jerusalem Youth Orchestra
 

1987 - 1999 Musical Director and Conductor.
1997-1998 season Conducted a concert commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel with the participation of the Kiskunfelegyhaza Youth Orchestra (Hungary). The program included original Israeli and Hungarian works based on folklore sources. The guest orchestra performed the suite “Ancient Dances” by Andre Hajdu, conducted by Eitan Avitsur. 
Conducted a series of concerts for youth and schools. 
Conducted a concert tour in Germany (Summer 1998).
1996-1997 season Conducted a series of concerts for schools. 
Under a cultural exchange program between Israel and Hungary, led a concert tour in Hungary and Czechia (summer 1997). 
Received prize for “Excellent Conductor” youth orchestra competition, Bekescaba, Hungary.
1995-1996 season  Conducted a series of concerts which included performances of works especially commissioned for the orchestra. Conducted a special concert in honor of the visit to Israel of 30 foreign Ministers of Education. Arranged a concert tour of the United States, which included a concert at Disney World. The orchestra participated in a special seminar for conductors arranged by the Center for Music in Mishkanot Sha’ananim, under the direction of Laslo Maroshi.
1994-1995 season Conducted a series of concerts for schools. 
Conducted a special program at the Jerusalem Theatre with the participation of orchestras from Holland and Denmark. 
Conducted a series of festival concerts under the auspices of the Municipality of Jerusalem, the Ministry of Education  and other sources. 
Conducted a special concert on the occasion of “The Day of Music and Dance” in the Independence Day.
1993 - 1994 season Conducted 14 concerts, including a performance held at the President’s Residence during Succot, a performance on Independence Day, and two concerts on the occasion of “the day of Music and Dance”, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. Conducted a series of concerts for schools. Lead a concert tour of Germany and Holland (summer 1994).
1992 - 1993 season Conducted 10 concerts. Conducted a special program in Honor of “The Year of Jerusalem”, which included original works commissioned for this event.
1991 - 1992 season  Conducted 30 concerts including a special concert commemorating the 500th anniversary of the deportation of Jews from Spain. This concert featured works especially commissioned for the event, and was recorded for Radio Israel.
1990 - 1991 season Conducted 30 concerts in a program similar to other years. The Gulf War restricted the orchestra’s musical season.
1989 - 1990 season Conducted 30 concerts in Israel. Arranged a Concert tour in the United States, recorded by radio and television networks in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington (August 1990).
1987 - 1988 season Conducted 40 concert of classical and light – classical programs, including a European concert tour (August 1987). Conducted a series concerts, including world premiere Israeli works, such as the suite “Ancient Dances” by Andre Hajdu, commissioned by the Rothschild Foundation Conducted a concert in the Music and Arts Festival in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem (Passover 1987).  Conducted a special concert at the Israel Prize Award Ceremony (Israel Independence Day 1987). Conducted a series of special concerts for youth and schools.
1988 - 1989 season Conducted 35 concerts similar to those performed during the 1987 – 1988 season. Conducted a special recording for Israel Television of the suite “Ancient Dances” by Andre Hajdu.
