Introduction
Department of Hebrew and Semitic Languages offers courses in Hebrew, other Semitic languages and Assyriology.
Studies in Hebrew are aimed at qualifying students in the following fields: Biblical Hebrew, Mishnaic Hebrew, Medieval Hebrew, traditions of Hebrew, Modern Hebrew; phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, lexicology, lexicography, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics.
In the Semitic languages various dialects of Aramaic are taught, including Biblical Aramaic, Jewish Palestinian Aramaic and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic. Studies in Assyriology include studies of Akkadian and Sumerian in cuneiform and in transliteration.

המחלקה ללשון העברית וללשונות שמיות מציעה קורסים בעברית, בשפות שמיות נוספות ובאשורולוגיה.
לימודי העברית מכוונים להכשרת תלמידים בתחומי הבאים: לשון מקרא, לשון חכמים, לשון תקופת הביניים, מסורות העברית, עברית חדשה; פונולוגיה, מורפולוגיה, תחביר, סמנטיקה, פרגמטיקה, חקר השיח, לקסיקולוגיה, לקסיקוגרפיה, סוציולינגוויסטיקה, פסיכולונגוויסטיקה.
במסגרת לימודי השפות השמיות נלמדים ניבים שונים של הארמית, לרבות ארמית מקראית, ארמית ארץ-ישראלית יהודית וארמית בבלית יהודית. לימודי האשורולוגיה כוללים לימודי אכדית ושומרית בכתב יתדות ובתעתיק.
