Professor Thomas Cushman, the editor of the Journal of Human Rights

In a message dated 6/5/2005 9:54:57 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, Professor Thomas Cushman, the editor of the Journal of Human Rights writes:

I am writing, both as the editor of the Journal of Human Rights and as a scholar to express my total dismay with your policy of boycotting Bar-Ilan

University and Haifa Universities.

This move is in no way justifiable, either as a political strategy, or as an appropriate practice for the fostering of academic freedom between scholars in Israel and the UK. Nor will it serve the purpose of dialogue which is so vital at the present time for peace in the Middle East. I am

visiting professor of law at University of :London and regularly engage in free and open debates on matters pertaining to Israel. In addition, in my

journal I publish articles by leading scholars who dissent from the policies of the current Israeli administration. If I were to boycott these or any other Israeli institutions, these voices would not be heard.

I sincerely hope that the AUT does not continue down this path and will reverse this decision.

I am, in any case, poised to produce a special issue of my journal on this matter, considering your action to be a violation of academic freedom and the more fundamental human right of freedom of association.

Sincerely,

Thomas Cushman
