re: boycott on Israeli universities

As an academic who has been working in the United Kingdom since 2000,
and who spent twenty years teaching in South Africa, I am opposed to
academic boycotts. My own experience is that many academics work against
oppressive regimes and a boycott, which restricts the free circulation of knowledge
and ideas, seldom damages the government in power and does a lot to
restrict opportunities to voice opposition and to teach the tolerant
consideration of all opinions. The AUT should not be imposing a boycott
on Israeli universities, their staff and students. To use discrimination
in this manner does an injustice to British democracy, academic freedom and
freedom of expression.
