NATFHE CONDEMNS BOMBING AT JERUSALEM UNIVERSITY 1 August 2002
NATFHE-The University & College Lecturers' union today condemned bombers responsible for an explosion that killed and injured staff and students at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Tom Wilson, the head of NATFHE's Universities department said:
'In recent months, both Israeli and Palestinian universities have found themselves on the front line in this appalling conflict. We utterly condemn the perpetrators of this terrible atrocity committed against students and staff at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. This union, naturally concerned about educational freedoms and rights, has also condemned recent Israeli attacks upon Palestinian areas, including Palestinian Universities and Colleges, which led to the death and injury of Palestinian civilians including staff and students. The targeting of educational institutions and their occupants is inexcusable.
'This sad event and many others highlight the need for a just political solution to the crisis in Israel and the Palestinian territories. It is NATFHE's view that violence from both sides is a basic obstacle to a just peace but we believe that the ending of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory is a prerequisite to any resolution of the crisis. We urge the UK government to review its policies and bring pressures to bear upon Israel and its allies, to establish a just solution.'
