Meir Shamir

Bar-Ilan University bestows an honorary doctorate upon Meir Shamir, in recognition of his pivotal role in Israel's business sector, his noted "investment" in Israeli academia and in furthering Bible study, and his generous support of needy university students.

We are particularly proud to grant this highly coveted award upon one of Bar-Ilan's very own.  A graduate of our School of Business Administration, Mr. Shamir has made a quick ascent to the top echelons of Israel's business world. He currently presides as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of the flagship Israel-based investment company, Mivtach Shamir Holdings Ltd. Investing in three core sectors – high technology and communications, real estate and industry, the Company’s major interests include Gilat Satellite Ltd.,  Elbit Vision Systems, Hod Ha’Sharon Towers, Digel Investments and Holdings and Manif Financial Services. The Company similarly invests in real estates in India, Bulgaria and Germany.

A former combat Phantom pilot in the Israel Air Force, Meir Shamir is one of the foremost investors on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Mr. Shamir is truly "salt of the earth." He is a partner of the Dankner family's Israel Salt Industries, which owns shares in Bank Hapoalim – Israel's largest bank.

Meir Shamir is credited with "reinvesting" profits into worthy philanthropic causes, including support for today's students – tomorrow's leaders.  A member of the BIU Board of Trustees since 2005, Mr. Shamir has generously funded scholarships and recently dedicated the Zalman Shamir Bible Department at BIU in memory of his late father. He maintains a close bond with Bar-Ilan University, where his wife, Dr. Adina Shamir, heads the University's Special Education undergraduate program and lectures in the School of Education.

In tribute to his astute and exemplary leadership in business and philanthropy, and his vital contribution to the Israeli economy and academia, Bar-Ilan University is honored to grant Meir Shamir with an honorary doctorate.
