Bread, Water & Gas

Shoshana Sarah

Fela Kuti sings the way
Sidney Poitier speaks
with diction and intention
like the African prehistoric
shape of the red flowered umbrella tree
of the land of Israel
and distinctive sea flavored
breath of the Mediterranean Sea
on the coasts of Ashqalon
We had gas, water, & bread
Man cannot live on bread alone-
and we also had the road
chasing pavements

Shoshana Sarah is a poet, collage artist, translator, and English teacher and has a master’s degree in International Relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has written five books of poetry; directed a documentary, Stranger; and blogs at shoshanasarah.com.
