BAR-ILAN INSTITUTE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY & ADVANCED MATERIALS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
applied for and were awarded two grants under the European Eurostars program. The first one, NanoScale , with the collaboration of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris, France, is intended to develop and create a prototype for Nanopatterned Attachments for Nanometric Optical Standardization, Calibration and Length Estimation. The work will be done in collaboration with Prof. Adi Salomon’s laboratory from BINA. The second project, NanoPerWater , with companies LiqTech Intl (Denmark), Unitech srl (Italy), and academic institutions Aalborg University in Denmark, University of Turin’s Department of Chemistry, and Italy’s National Research Council’s Institute of Nanoscience, is working towards the creation of a novel water filtration membrane based on NanoPerovskite for abatement of Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs). The work will be done in collaboration with Prof. Aharon Gedanken’s BINA laboratory. For the first time, we were awarded a grant from the Israeli Ministry of Health in order to conduct a study examining air pollution in human tears. In addition, we were awarded an ISF grant for institutional equipment to purchase a new Focused Ion Beam (FIB) system. BINA labs continue to produce patents and patent applications. Due to the costly and time-consuming process of patent applications, BIRAD, BIU’s R&D company, examines each patent proposal closely, to ensure that only the most advanced projects are patented. Educational Initiatives BINA places great importance on investing in education programs. Its diversity and innovation have positioned BINA as a highly attractive institution for the training of up-and-coming researchers and professionals in the field of nanoscience. The sheer size of the BINA learning community—having reached a total of 390 Ph.D. and M.Sc. students—testifies to its overall educational success. BINA’s successful dynamic educational environment is a major factor in attracting and retaining post-doctoral researchers and junior scientists. The number of academicians in this category remained largely stable in recent years. BINA’s total research community reached 579 individuals in 2019, the highest level since the Institute’s founding.
