BAR-ILAN INSTITUTE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY & ADVANCED MATERIALS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

51 Prof. Ehud Banin The Mina & Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences Member of BINA, Nano-Medicine & Nano-Clean-tech Center Research Areas • Bacterial biofilms • Nanoparticles with anti-biofilm properties • Bio-ethanol production Abstract The Biofilm Research Laboratory Our lab focuses on microbial biofilms, with the aim of understanding the signals and processes that promote biofilm formation, and finding new methods for treating biofilm-related medical, industrial and environmental problems. Nanotechnology can provide new opportunities for preventing and fighting biofilm-mediated problems via atomic-scale tailored nanomaterials. Our group is exploring the utility of potential antimicrobial / antibiofilm nanomaterials including metal fluorides, metal oxides and N-halamine nanoparticles which can provide long lasting rechargeable antibiofilm/antimicrobial activity. TEM micrographs of S. aureus (cyan) treated with the synthesized nano-particles (yellow). The nano particles target bacteria and mark them for destruction.
