BAR-ILAN INSTITUTE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY & ADVANCED MATERIALS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Estimation. The second project, NanoPerWater , involves companies and academic institutions from Denmark and Italy working on the development of a novel water filtration membrane based on NanoPerovskite for the abatement of Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs). Nevertheless, two important needs remain unfunded: the acquisition of additional expensive equipment, and the cost of additional faculty. Both present major challenges that we must tackle in the coming years. Human Resources BINA is unique in how it creatively funds the salaries of technical research and administrative personnel that are employed by Bar-Ilan University. Ten employees are funded by the University’s overall budget and an additional fourteen (14!) are funded by BINA’s overall budget based on income from grants and income from services provided by the Institute. Due to the staff’s professionalism, initiative and creativity, BINA receives funding through prestigious grants for its involvement in research programs such as Eurostars , MAGNET and Erasmus+ . Taking part in these programs also expands the scope of our collaborations with industrial companies and increases revenues from services we provide them for research purposes. BINA’s continuous involvement in such programs allows us to hire more experts in various fields, which generates additional opportunities for participation in new initiatives, thereby ensuring a perpetual flow of income. New Initiatives BINA and the Israeli Photonics Center have combined forces and established one joint entity. Identifying as a single body allows researchers from both parties to use the equipment found in both organizations and also allows for them to apply for grants in Israel and abroad as a single entity. BINA established collaborations with Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Law, The Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Geography, applying for grants that focus on the regulatory aspects of the field of nanotechnology. Last but not least, we are proud of the initiative of the Joseph Fetter Museum of Nanotechnology and are happy that it opened its doors to student visitors. 6
