2021 ANNUAL REPORT | Bar-Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials

Continuing Education and Alumni Relations BINA continues to reach out to its alumni and graduates around the world, providing continuous updates about the institute’s research achievements and its expanding infrastructure of equipment. The BINA alumni newsletter’s 13th edition appeared in August 2021. The newsletter has proven to be an effective medium for encouraging communication between BINA and its former students and between BINA and new industrial partnerships. International Educational Cooperation Educational initiatives abroad continue to grow. They have mostly switched to Zoom communication to provide graduate students opportunities that include a large variety of courses and training with European partner institutions as part of the EU Erasmus+ programs. In November this year, the two EUfunded educational consortia in nanoelectronics and photonics came to an end. As part of the programs, we developed 44 courses for graduate students that are available to our students. In addition, dozens of students traveled to participate in intensive courses in various places in Europe and Asia. This is the place to thank our collaborators in the NanoEl project: Technical University of Sofia (Bulgaria), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Høgskolen i Sørøst-Norge (Norway), University of Malaya (Malaysia), UTAR Education Foundation LBG (Malaysia), Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), Chongqing University of Technology (China), University of Mumbai (India), NIIT University (India), Tel Aviv University (Israel) and the collaborators in the iPEN project: Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), University of Twente (Netherlands), Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürenberg (Germany), Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (Greece), Web2Learn (SME), Weizmann Institute of Technology (Israel), Sami Shamoon College of Engineering (Israel), Holon Institute of Technology (Israel), IUCC—Inter-University Computation Center (Israel), Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel) and Technion—Israel Institute of Technology (Israel). New Initiatives The Joseph Fetter Museum of Nanotechnology reopened its doors to student visits in May, sparking interest that is reflected in many visits. The exhibits, which combine the seemingly disparate disciplines of science and art, bring nanotechnology research to life in visually stunning art forms. We recognized that the part of a person’s personality that is expressed at work with us every day is but a pixel within the image of that individual, and this led us to the understanding that we can discover other parts of the overall picture by allowing ourselves to view additional aspects. “On Stage at BINA” is our title for exhibitions by BINA employees that enable them to present other aspects of their personalities. The first exhibition, held in June, consisted of portraits by Dr. Yossi Abulafia, fabrication unit manager. In parallel to the internationalization of BINA, we concentrated on making research connections with researchers from the faculties and departments that nourish the institute but are not members of BINA and from other departments at BIU. Our multidisciplinary nature allows us to expand our collaboration and to cooperate with researchers from the Faculties of Law, Life Sciences, Engineering, Exact Sciences and Medicine, the Department of Geography and the multidisciplinary Brain Research Center. Expanding these collaborations allows us to increase international collaborations and grant submissions on broader issues such as sustainability and bioconvergence. 56
