Human suffering is not a fate to be borne, but a challenge to be overcome.” (Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, zt’l) Impact tomorrow, today—this is BIU’s motto for any of its Faculties and Schools, Institutes and Centers. At BINA, we impart this mission on each and every of our many operational areas, be it fundamental research, R&D collaborations, educational programs and activities intended to promote our scientific community. With much determination, persistence and extensive effort, we are harnessing our excellence and sense of responsibility to meet some of humanity's most pressing challenges. Over the past decade, BINA researchers have published more than 4,500 papers in leading academic journals, including Nature, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Physical Review Letters, Nanoscale and Optics Letters. After a record year in publications, we saw a decrease in numbers in 2022, partly due to the generational change that naturally occurs in any organization. It was a productive year for students’ published research, with 75 students receiving first author awards for articles published in leading academic journals. BINA continues to demonstrate its success in maintaining the amount of grant funding through numerous applied-research and academic grants. These include grants from European Union sources, such as the European Research Council (ERC) and Horizon Europe; from the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF), the U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF), the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) and Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology; and from industry-oriented funding programs, such as MAGNET, Nofar and Kamin. Over the past decade, research grants have crossed the $220 million threshold, averaging over $235,000 per researcher annually—a remarkable feat. Moreover, as a research institute, BINA has received several international grants through Erasmus+ projects advancing nanotechnology education and Eurostars for collaborating with industry. Another noteworthy achievement: for five consecutive years, BINA has won each of its submitted grants to the Council for Higher Education and Wolfson Foundation regarding advanced infrastructure equipment acquirement—in the cumulative sum of over $50 million. 39
