31 What’s in a name? The company name, Malanta, is based on the Hebrew-Arabic slang malan, meaning “a lot.” The expression, malantalafim, or “many thousands,” gave rise to Malanta. Shpaisman and Greenberg believe that Malanta can be scaled quickly into a player in the plant-based alternative meat market. Malanta meets industrial standards for the production of plant-based meat alternatives and its first production line will extrude about 600 kilograms of product an hour, which is more than an order of magnitude faster than competing technologies. The Malanta proprietary method is also inexpensive at about $0.08 per kilogram of product. And, it has an excellent appearance. “There are a lot of companies that try to make raw material products for the vegan market—better fibers, better tastes,” Shpaisman commented. “We would love to incorporate their products in our steak.” The stakes could not be higher (pun intended), and Shpaisman is aware of the difficult road ahead for his startup. “We are confident that our technique in producing marbleized plant-based meat alternatives is not only unique on the market, but will propel Malanta forward with an underlying magic based on our research and our solid collaborations.”
