Artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved from a distant technological promise into a driving force shaping the economy, science, and society. It is transforming the way we diagnose diseases, manage cities, develop autonomous vehicles, and create content.

While many people are learning how to use existing AI applications, the market urgently needs professionals who understand what is happening under the hood. This is precisely the need addressed by the new program offered by Bar-Ilan University’s Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

A Statement of Intent: The Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

Recognizing that artificial intelligence is no longer merely a subfield of computer science, but a major discipline in its own right, Bar-Ilan University recently announced a strategic change: the department has been renamed the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

This is far more than a semantic change. It reflects Bar-Ilan’s position as home to one of Israel’s longest-established, largest, and most highly regarded AI research groups.

The new degree is driven by a first-rate team of approximately 15 researchers whose work has earned national and international recognition. Together, they stand at the forefront of academic AI research.

The figures speak for themselves. The group includes two Fellows of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, out of only six in Israel, and three Fellows of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, out of only eight nationwide.

These are among the world’s most prestigious and influential scientific organizations. The fact that such a significant proportion of their Israeli Fellows are based at Bar-Ilan reflects the exceptional standard of research and teaching to which students will be exposed.

The group includes leading figures in robotics and artificial intelligence, as well as recipients of prestigious awards whose research continues to shape the field.

Reinventing Undergraduate AI Education: What Happens Inside the Black Box?

The B.Sc. in Computational Artificial Intelligence is a groundbreaking program designed to identify and integrate the areas of knowledge required for advanced training in AI.

Unlike general computer science degrees, the program has a distinctive structure and curriculum that provide in-depth, specialized AI education from the very first year.

The objective is clear: graduates will not merely be end users writing code that calls ready-made software libraries developed by others. They will build the underlying infrastructure themselves.

They will learn to construct large language models, develop advanced machine-learning algorithms, and design intelligent agent systems and autonomous robots.

The Curriculum: From Theory to the Laboratory

Training the next generation of AI researchers and developers requires a complex educational process that brings together different levels of abstraction.

On the one hand, students need a strong understanding of computer architecture and distributed systems programming in order to harness powerful GPUs and optimize deep-learning processes.

On the other, they require advanced mathematical abilities and a deep understanding of computer science fundamentals, enabling them to develop an algorithmic understanding of generative learning and decision-making in changing environments.

The program’s distinctive courses include:

Building Large Language Models: An advanced course exploring the architecture behind the models that have transformed the world.

Multi-Agent Systems: An examination of how intelligent entities, whether robots or software agents, communicate and collaborate to achieve shared objectives.

Reinforcement Learning: The field that enables machines to learn through trial and error.

Robotics and LLM-Based Agents: A course connecting language-based intelligence with physical action in the real world.

The Smart Choice: Flexible Study Tracks

To enable each student to select the pathway that best matches their interests and ambitions, the program offers several options.

Single-Major B.Sc. Track

Designed for students who wish to focus fully on the scientific and computational aspects of data science and artificial intelligence.

The track includes a year-long practical capstone project and a research seminar in which students do more than present research—they put it into practice.

Double-Major Track

An exciting interdisciplinary option that allows students to combine AI with related fields such as brain sciences, physics, mathematics, or economics.

This combination is increasingly important in an era in which artificial intelligence is becoming a central research tool across every scientific discipline.

Ma’alot – The Direct Path to a Master’s Degree

An accelerated honors track that enables outstanding students to complete both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Computational Artificial Intelligence within a shorter timeframe and move rapidly into key research and development positions in the high-tech industry.

Careers in a New World: Where Can Our Graduates Go?

Demand for professionals with expertise in computational artificial intelligence is at an all-time high.

Bar-Ilan graduates go on to work at the world’s leading technology companies, from Google and Microsoft to cutting-edge start-ups in cybersecurity and medicine, as well as academic research centers.

The practical training offered in the department’s advanced robotics, natural language processing, and cryptography laboratories gives students a significant advantage in the job market.

Throughout the degree, students participate in meetings with industry experts, career fairs, and personalized mentoring programs. These opportunities enable them to begin building their careers on a strong foundation, even before they graduate.
