With a passion for Shakespeare and French comedy, drama, theater and reading (yes, reading!), Dorit Ben Tov, 20, is enamored with her studies at Bar-Ilan’s Department of Comparative Literature. The perky undergrad, who is now completing her first year on campus, arrived at BIU after a year of national service as a tour guide at the historic Mivkeh Israel youth village and the Haganah Museum in Holon, her hometown. A former cosplayer who donned medieval costumes, she dreams of becoming a playwright. In the meantime, she is focused on her academic pursuits and documenting her Bar-Ilan experience as an avid BIU Instagram reporter. Dorit gives us a glimpse into her academic life and plans.

Why I chose to study this area:

I literally LOVE literature (especially theater) – I’ve always been good at literature since my elementary school days, and I think that it's great to discover new cultures through comparative literature studies!

What I enjoy most at Bar-Ilan:

The studies, especially my Shakespeare and French comedy classes. The teachers are so great, and I enjoy every minute! They are so passionate about the plays that we’re studying – you can actually imagine that Hamlet, or Romeo and Juliet are coming alive!

Future plans:

I want to finish my BA degree with really good marks. I’d love to be a playwright or find other theater-related work. And I hope to complete the styling, makeup, and hairstyling courses that I'm also taking for fun, and maybe for an extra job. I also would like to get married – and yeah, I have a boyfriend – he’s a Hesder Yeshiva guy who’s serving in the IDF’s Givati Brigade!

My favorite corner on campus:

The Anna & Max Webb and Family Psychology Building (#902) – it's definitely like a castle!

What I will take with me from my Bar-Ilan studies:

The knowledge from the classes - because I'm sure it will help me in my future work. My area is comparative literature, so there's a lot of knowledge about different kinds of literature and it's really interesting! And as I say: “Knowledge is power!”
