  • With a global transition towards LED lighting and rapid population growth in coastal regions, researchers say the harmful effects of artificial light must be considered in order to preserve coral reefs already endangered by a variety of additional threats

    The daily light-dark cycle arising from the earth’s rotation is centrally important to biology. Marine organisms, particularly coral reefs, rely on natural light cycles of sunlight and moonlight to regulate various physiological, biological and behavioral processes.

A New Home for Computer Science

  • One of the largest departments at Bar-Ilan University is getting a new home. When completed the Alexander Grass Computer Science Building will house the Department of Computer Science, considered a world leader in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, cryptography and natural language processing.

    At a small gathering due to coronavirus limitations, a cornerstone-laying ceremony was held at the site of the future building in the heart of the University campus.

Time Alone vs. Time with Others

  • How do people experience time alone and time with others? Findings from a new Bar-Ilan University study reveal the intricacies of people's experiences in these basic social conditions.

    The study used a unique approach of analyzing self-generated text from more than 1,700 participants who performed a sentence-completion task regarding their experience alone and their social experience when in the company of others. This approach shed light on people's perceptions when free to express themselves without being bound to specific questions.

A New Record at Bar-Ilan University

For the graduates, the doctoral ceremony marks the culmination of a long and challenging period of study, original thinking and research. The special ceremony also reflects the many resources the University invests in research, and the importance it attaches to scientific investigation.

Second Honor of 2020 for Bible Scholar

  • Prof. (Emeritus) Edward L. Greenstein, of Bar-Ilan’s Zalman Shamir Bible Department, will be awarded the prestigious Jordan Schnitzer Book Award for 2020 in the category of Biblical Studies, Rabbinics, and Jewish History & Culture in Antiquity. Prof. Greenstein is being recognized for his much-acclaimed annotated English translation of the Book of Job, entitled Job: A New Translation (Yale University Press, 2019).

Rare Menorah May Date to Hasmonean Era

  • In the 1980s, during a survey initiated by the Staff Office for Archaeology in Judea and Samaria, a graffito of a seven-branched menorah at the entrance to a tomb on the outskirts of the Arab village of Mukhmas was discovered.  The finding was archived at the Staff Office Archaeology Unit and has been brought to light by Dr. Dvir Raviv, of Bar-Ilan University's Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology, most recently in a paper published in the archaeology and history journal In the Highland's Depth.

World's Leading Scientists Ranked

  • Prof. Doron Aurbach, of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials and the Department of Chemistry at Bar-Ilan University, is among the top 0.5% of scientists in the world, according to a ranking recently published by Stanford University in the journal PLOS Biology.  The study combines several different metrics to systematically rank the most influential scientists by scientific field as measured by citations.

European Research Council Grants Awarded

  • Prof. Omry Koren and Prof. Avi Zadok, two of Bar-Ilan University's most prolific researchers, are recipients of prestigious Consolidator Grants from the EU's European Research Council (ERC). ERC Consolidator Grants are awarded to outstanding researchers with a scientific track record showing great promise.

    "The researchers who receive these grants are the top in Israel in their fields," Vice President for Research Prof. Shulamit Michaeli, who guided the Bar-Ilan applicants through the application process," said.
