Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, is an opportune time to think about… time! Time is everywhere, but it’s not just a natural, uniform and absolute entity that we measure. The thousands of calendars in the world indicate that time has cultural dimensions – it is flexible and may be manipulated. Prof. Ely Merzbach of the Department of Mathematics at Bar-Ilan University discusses the calculations and considerations that have shaped the Hebrew calendar for some 1,100 years.

Innovative Teaching

Bar-Ilan University and its faculty members are committed to innovative and effective teaching at the highest level. Every year, hundreds of lecturers participate in workshops at the university’s Center for the Promotion of Teaching and acquire tools to maximize their teaching potential, including the use of illustrations in instruction, creating effective presentations, group guidance, increasing motivation, active teaching and many other topics. As part of this strategy, advanced teaching methods are implemented and interactive classrooms are being established.

“Israeli Hope in Academia” seeks to create encounters and discourse between diverse groups in Israeli society out of respect and tolerance, in order to bring about fundamental change in society. “Israeli Hope” is part of the Israeli President’s flagship national program that combines a scope of activities on “the new Israeli agenda”, encompassing key social and economic fields: education, employment, sport, communications, leadership and academia, and more.
