Centennial Prize to Prof. Beena Kalisky

Prof. Beena Kalisky of Bar-Ilan University’s Department of Physics is the winner of the Na'amat Centennial Prize for groundbreaking women scientists.

Prof. Kalisky, a world-renowned physicist, states that “as a researcher, I cannot separate my scientific work from being a woman, a wife and a mother.” The prize committee noted that Prof. Kalisky indeed “attests to the fact that there is no need for such a separation and that there is no one more deserving than her to receive Naamat’s Centennial Prize.”

3D Printing in Medicine

Bar-Ilan University’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee will offer a new course, that aims to provide exposure to the use of innovative three-dimensional-based technologies for medical treatment. The course will be led by Prof. Samer Srouji, Director of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Galilee Medical Center.

The technology has been selected by the Israel Space Agency and the Ramon Foundation to be placed on board the Rakia mission scheduled to lift off on March 31, 2022, the Ramon Foundation officially announced today.

In visual memory, size matters

Every day we ​​encounter images on the wall, in newspapers, books, and electronic devices. Some become etched in our memory and some don't. The elements influencing whether we remember one image and not the other aren't yet known, but researchers have assumed that image size and memory aren't connected to one another, since we usually understand what appears in an image, whether it is large or small.

Long COVID

A new study shows a major reduction in the most commonly-reported long-term symptoms of COVID-19 among individuals vaccinated with two doses and infected with the virus compared to non-vaccinated previously-infected individuals. 

Those vaccinated and infected individuals reported no more of these symptoms than individuals who were never infected with the virus.

COVID-19 and Mental Health

As research into the impact of COVID-19 on psychological well-being unfolds, a Bar-Ilan University study reveals a correlation between physiological data collected prior to the pandemic and heightened COVID-related fears, particularly among individuals with average to larger households.

COVID-related fears were also higher in women compared to men and in individuals who reported a decline in financial status during the pandemic.

Top Honors

Two outstanding Bar-Ilan University researchers -- Dr. Nitzan Gonen, of the Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences and Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, and Dr. Shai Bel, of the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine -- are the recipients of two European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants totaling NIS 12 million for their research on sex development, sex reversal and infertility, and the role of the intestinal mucus layer in development of inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the ERC announced today.
