Prof. Arie Zaban, Bar-Ilan University President

Prof. Arie Zaban was inaugurated President of Bar-Ilan University in October 2017. Previously he served as Vice President for Research and as the founding Director of the Bar-Ilan Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials. Prof. Zaban has served as the chairman of the Association of University Heads in Israel (VERA) from July 2022 until July 2024.

 

Over the past 6 years under Prof. Zaban’s leadership, Bar-Ilan has become the fastest growing university in Israel, with exponential growth in student enrollment. The budget was balanced, and a new professional culture with fiscal responsibility was introduced. These steps were taken simultaneous with the renewal and addition of physical infrastructure and technological advances throughout the campus. In addition, major interdisciplinary and intersectoral projects were launched as part of President Zaban’s strategic vision for Bar-Ilan University.

Prof. Zaban has been a powerful force in materials science and renewable energy, with over 26,000 citations (h-index = 79)  and over 230 publications in refereed journals, 5 book chapters and 75 invited lectures. He has garnered numerous prizes, among them the ICS Prize for Outstanding Young Scientist, the Michael Landau Research Prize in Renewable Energy, the IVS Research Excellence Prize and the Israel Chemical Society Prize of Excellence, the Kolthoff Prize from the Technion. To ensure that his research has a positive impact, Prof. Zaban founded five companies based on eight of his patents.

Prof. Zaban joined Bar-Ilan as a bachelor’s degree student after completing his service as a pilot in the Israeli Air Force. Today he and his wife Racheli live in Shoham and have four children and eight grandchildren.
